It’s not just a game, it's her life.
There are many misconceptions about the mission of Special Olympics and one is that the organization is just sports. Yes, sports is what Special Olympics does and is well-known for, but it’s not all the organization stands for. Special Olympics Massachusetts stands for healthy, vibrant and fulfilling lives for people with intellectual disabilities. Sports and health related programming is how Special Olympics Massachusetts is helping athletes live longer and healthier lives. Not just sports…
The Healthy Athletes program is a perfect example. Through the sports they love, health screenings and increased access to quality healthcare professionals, the world has changed for many individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. These health screenings take place at a number of events during the course of the year. It’s not just a game to the thousands of people this organization has served, it’s their lives. People with intellectual disabilities are living longer as a result of their participation in Special Olympics programs.
Take five year old Sarah. While Sarah is just starting out with Special Olympics, she has the opportunity to live a life that many people take for granted, due in part to her participation in Special Olympics Massachusetts’ year-round programs. The future is bright for Sarah and many others who come to Special Olympics Massachusetts because of the entirety of what this organization offers. Sports and healthy living equals a long and vibrant life. That’s what Special Olympics Massachusetts stands for, and what Sarah can expect in the years to come.
